Dan Cook proposes a schema model for game loops that consist of a sequence (Chris Crawford conversation model):

  • Decision
  • Action
  • Simulation
  • Feedback
  • Modeling

Each complete loop is a mini puzzle where the player decides what to do, takes action, receives feedback from the game, and updates their mental model based on the outcome (Liminal thinking - The pyramid of belief).

The mastery of a skill is pleasurable (Games are fun because you master skills) and is characterized by repetition (Spaced repetition focuses on what is least known) and experimentation Children need rules to be able to play with the rules — what is often perceived as play.

Chaining these loops forms a web of interconnected skills that define the player's journey through the game - Game Loop Arcs Deliver Pre-Processed Information in Games.
