My zettelkasten has taught me (Zettelkasten surprises with new ideas) something I hadn't noticed before, but now I'm seeing it everywhere. The world operates in oscillations between two opposing sides (Life's ups and downs are normal) of a spectrum. Let me explain.
I've been thinking of this in terms of the safety dance (Safety Dance swimming story), where we as humans will leave out comfort zone temporarily to gain an edge (Hyper Light Drifter incentivizes reckless play). But we eventually retreat back to safety - our comfort zone - and operate there until we need to step out into the discomfort once again.
When drawn on a graph, this dance between safety and comfort looks like a zig-zagging path (Saw shaped difficulty curve) that progresses upward and to the right as we get more and more comfortable with the challenges. It's a wave looking shape.
If we were to smooth the wave out to remove the context specific noise, we have something that looks like a sine wave. Sine waves can also be modeled as a rotating circle - a cycle rather than a forward progressing wave.
And cycles are repeated in perpetuity. Game loops (Game loops help players learn) are cycles (which, when unwrapped, are arcs of specific activities/goals). Even the Lord has put everything into a pattern of seasons (Ecclesiastes 3) and cycles. The yearly seasons, the [Jewish feasts/fasts][8], monthly cycles of the moon, hormones, daily cycles or light and dark, etc.
The safety dance is one small representation of the way God's universe works. But it's a fractally (permaculture shapes) small representation of something so much bigger.
