In How Children Learn, Holt tells a story of a child learning to swim by stepping in and out of safety. He would cling tightly to Holt while not feeling brave, then he would let go and swim around independently until he no longer feels secure about his independence. So he would go back to Holt and hold tight until the bravery built up again.

This feels very similar to the combat dance (Chris Crawford conversation model) of Hyper Light Drifter (Hyper Light Drifter incentivizes reckless play) where the player dashes in and out of fights playing it safe with bullets and playing it bravely with slashes.

The safety/independence dance (Saw shaped difficulty curve) seems to be a more universalized model of learning to do difficult things. This seems to work best when there is an integrated and context appropriate reward associated with doing the difficult thing to be able to guiltlessly appreciate the safe reward.
