Saying that inflammation is a problem is not true. Chronic inflammation (Autoimmune symptoms are the weak link) is the real problem. Inflammation is a highly sophisticated and helpful protection mechanism created by your body. Only when your immune system becomes overzealous does it become an issue.

Generalizing this principle, it seems like this could be abstracted to something like:

When a helpful protection mechanism meant for temporary use is chronically applied, it causes long term unintended consequences (Second Order Thinking).

Some examples:

  • Parenting

    • Helicopter Parenting - Protect your kid from shame, pain, etc.
    • The kid comes to rely entirely on their parent for decisions, and doesn't build thier own skills to solve their own problems.
  • Education

    • Compulsory Education - Guarantees children are educated and no one is left behind
    • Lack of interest from students and an inherently poor learning experience
  • Game Design

    • Handholding - Protecting your game from high drop-off rates
    • The game doesn't challenge the user in any way, and therefore becomes boring and uninteresting
