"Batman: Arkham Asylum" is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive alongside Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game is based on the DC Comics superhero Batman and is the first installment in the Batman: Arkham series. The narrative centers on Batman's effort to thwart the Joker's plan to seize control of Arkham Asylum and trap Batman within its confines alongside many of his foes.

The game is presented from a third-person perspective, allowing players to control Batman as he navigates the asylum. The initial stages are linear, serving as a tutorial for the game's mechanics. Once past these areas, players can freely explore the island, though certain sections remain inaccessible until specific points in the story are reached. Batman's movement capabilities include running, jumping, climbing, crouching, gliding using his cape, and utilizing a grapple gun to reach elevated areas.

A notable feature is "Detective Vision," a visual mode that provides contextual information by highlighting interactive objects, enemies, and structural weaknesses. This mode is essential for solving puzzles and strategizing during combat. Batman's arsenal includes gadgets such as the batarang, which can stun enemies or activate remote devices; explosive gel for breaking weak walls and floors; the line launcher for crossing wide gaps; and the Batclaw for manipulating distant objects or pulling enemies closer.

Combat emphasizes a free-flowing system where players can chain together attacks, counters, and dodges to handle groups of enemies efficiently. Stealth is also a critical component, with players encouraged to use the environment to their advantage, silently eliminating adversaries to avoid direct confrontations.

Beyond the main storyline, the game offers side activities like solving riddles left by the Riddler, which involve finding hidden items or scanning specific locations. These challenges provide additional depth and encourage exploration of the richly detailed game world.

Upon its release, "Batman: Arkham Asylum" received critical acclaim for its engaging narrative, atmospheric setting, and innovative gameplay mechanics. It has been lauded as one of the greatest comic book-based video games ever made and has won several awards, including Best Action Adventure game and Game of the Year from various media outlets. The game's success led to the development of a series of sequels and spin-offs, further expanding the Batman: Arkham franchise.
