Sega. (1991). Sonic the Hedgehog [Video game]. Sega Genesis.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis. Players control Sonic, a blue hedgehog with the ability to run at supersonic speeds, on a quest to thwart the evil Dr. Robotnik, who has imprisoned animals in robots and seeks the powerful Chaos Emeralds. The game is renowned for its fast-paced gameplay, vibrant graphics, and memorable soundtrack composed by Masato Nakamura.

The gameplay involves navigating through various zones, each comprising multiple acts filled with obstacles, enemies, and environmental hazards. Sonic's primary abilities include running at high speeds and performing a spin attack, which allows him to damage enemies and break certain objects. Collecting rings serves as a health system; holding at least one ring enables Sonic to survive a hit from an enemy or obstacle, though he will lose all rings upon impact. Gathering 100 rings grants an extra life. Additionally, if Sonic finishes an act with at least 50 rings, he can access a special stage to obtain a Chaos Emerald.

The game is divided into six principal zones, each with a unique theme and challenges, followed by a final zone where Sonic confronts Dr. Robotnik. Each zone culminates in a boss battle against Robotnik, who employs various machines to impede Sonic's progress. The zones are designed to encourage speed and exploration, featuring multiple pathways and hidden areas.

Development of Sonic the Hedgehog began in 1990 when Sega sought a mascot character to compete with Nintendo's Mario. The character design was created by Naoto Ohshima, with programming led by Yuji Naka and level design by Hirokazu Yasuhara. The game's success was instrumental in establishing the Sega Genesis as a major competitor in the 16-bit console market, significantly boosting Sega's market share. It received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay, impressive graphics, and catchy music, and has sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The game's popularity led to numerous sequels and spin-offs, solidifying Sonic as one of the most iconic characters in video game history.
