Super Mario Galaxy is a 2007 action-adventure platformer developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo and published by Nintendo for the Wii console. The game follows Mario's quest to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, who has captured her and taken her to the center of the universe. Mario navigates through galaxies to collect Power Stars, which are used to progress through the game and unlock new areas.

The gameplay emphasizes a blend of traditional platforming with innovative gravity mechanics. Players control Mario as he traverses spherical planets, each with its own gravitational pull, creating unique platforming challenges. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk are used for movement, spinning, and interacting with objects, while the pointer feature collects Star Bits, a secondary collectible that can also be used offensively against enemies. Mario's abilities include running, jumping, and spinning to attack or solve puzzles, enhanced by temporary power-ups like the Bee Suit or Boo Suit, which allow flight or invisibility.

The game is structured around a hub world, the Comet Observatory, from which players access different galaxies containing multiple levels. Each level typically involves completing objectives or defeating bosses to obtain Power Stars. Additionally, Super Mario Galaxy introduces a cooperative mode where a second player can assist by collecting Star Bits or immobilizing enemies.

Critically acclaimed for its imaginative design, visuals, and orchestral soundtrack, the game was praised as a milestone in the platforming genre. It received numerous awards, including Game of the Year accolades, and sold over 12 million copies, making it one of the best-selling Wii games. A sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, was released in 2010, further refining the mechanics introduced in the original.
