Fallout 3 is a 2008 action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It represents a significant evolution in the Fallout series, transitioning from the 2D isometric, turn-based format of earlier titles to a fully 3D open-world experience with real-time combat. Set in the year 2277, 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse, players explore the Capital Wasteland, a desolate region encompassing the ruins of Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas.

Players assume the role of the "Lone Wanderer," an inhabitant of Vault 101, one of several underground shelters designed to protect humanity from nuclear fallout. The narrative begins as the protagonist leaves the vault to search for their missing father, leading to encounters with various factions, including the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave, the latter being remnants of the pre-war U.S. government.

The gameplay emphasizes exploration, character development, and decision-making. Players can customize their character's attributes and skills using the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system—an acronym for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. This system influences gameplay aspects such as combat effectiveness, dialogue options, and interaction with the game world.

Combat can be approached in real-time or through the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.), which pauses the action to allow targeted attacks on specific enemy body parts, adding a strategic layer to engagements. The game also features a karma system that tracks the player's moral decisions, affecting character interactions and leading to multiple possible endings.

Upon release, Fallout 3 received critical acclaim for its open-ended gameplay and flexible character-leveling system. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and is considered one of the best video games ever made. The game shipped almost five million copies in its first week and was supported post-launch with five downloadable add-ons. It was followed by a spin-off, Fallout: New Vegas, in 2010, and a direct sequel, Fallout 4, in 2015.
