Grand Theft Auto V is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Set in the fictional state of San Andreas, which is based on Southern California, the game features an open world environment that players can explore freely. The single-player narrative follows three protagonists: Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber; Franklin Clinton, a street gangster; and Trevor Philips, a drug dealer and gunrunner. These characters collaborate to execute heists under pressure from a corrupt government agency and other criminal elements.

The gameplay is presented from both third-person and first-person perspectives, allowing players to navigate the expansive world on foot or via various vehicles, including cars, boats, and aircraft. A distinctive feature of the game is the ability to switch between the three protagonists during and outside of missions, offering diverse perspectives and strategic advantages. The game emphasizes heist sequences, with missions that involve a combination of shooting and driving mechanics. Players can utilize melee attacks, firearms, and explosives to combat enemies and have the ability to take cover during firefights to mitigate damage. The "wanted" system governs law enforcement responses to criminal activities, escalating as players commit more serious offenses.

Beyond the main storyline, Grand Theft Auto V offers a multitude of side activities and an extensive open world comprising urban areas, mountains, and beaches. The game also includes Grand Theft Auto Online, its online multiplayer mode, which supports up to 30 players engaging in various cooperative and competitive modes. Since its release, Grand Theft Auto V has received critical acclaim for its multi-protagonist design, open world, and gameplay mechanics. It has achieved significant commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling video games of all time, with over 205 million copies sold and generating more than $8.5 billion in worldwide revenue.
