"Metal Gear Solid" is a 1998 action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation. Directed, produced, and written by Hideo Kojima, it follows the MSX2 video games "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake." The game was unveiled at the 1996 Tokyo Game Show and demonstrated at trade shows including the 1997 Electronic Entertainment Expo; its Japanese release was originally planned for late 1997 but was delayed to 1998.

Players control Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit. Snake must liberate hostages and stop the terrorists from launching a nuclear strike. Cinematic cutscenes are rendered using the in-game engine and graphics, with voice acting throughout.

The gameplay emphasizes stealth, requiring players to avoid detection by enemies. Detection leads to an alarm, prompting enemies to pursue Snake. To remain undetected, players can use various tactics, such as crawling under objects, using boxes as camouflage, and employing gadgets like the Soliton Radar, which provides information on enemy positions and their field of vision. The game also features boss battles, each requiring unique strategies to defeat adversaries like Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf, and Psycho Mantis.

"Metal Gear Solid" received critical acclaim, selling more than seven million copies worldwide and shipping 12 million demos. It scored an average of 94/100 on Metacritic and is regarded as one of the greatest and most important video games of all time, helping to popularize the stealth genre and in-engine cinematic cutscenes.
