The Last of Us is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across the country. The game is played from a third-person perspective, emphasizing stealth and combat to navigate through hostile environments filled with human enemies and infected creatures.

Gameplay mechanics involve a combination of exploration, crafting, and combat. Players can use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth tactics to confront or evade adversaries. The crafting system allows the creation of items like health kits and Molotov cocktails using scavenged materials, adding a layer of strategy in resource management. The artificial intelligence of enemies and companions enhances the immersive experience, with companions assisting in combat and reacting dynamically to situations.

The narrative is a significant aspect of the game, focusing on the developing bond between Joel and Ellie as they journey through a devastated world. Their relationship evolves amidst encounters with various factions and survivors, each presenting moral dilemmas and challenges that impact the story's progression.

In addition to the single-player campaign, The Last of Us includes an online multiplayer mode where up to eight players can engage in cooperative and competitive gameplay. This mode extends the game's replayability by offering various objectives and team-based combat scenarios.

The game received critical acclaim for its storytelling, character development, and gameplay mechanics, earning numerous Game of the Year awards. It has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made, influencing subsequent titles in the action-adventure genre. The success of The Last of Us led to the development of a sequel, The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, and a remake titled The Last of Us Part I, released in 2022.
