"Plants vs. Zombies" is a tower defense game developed and published by PopCap Games in 2009. In this game, players defend a suburban home from waves of zombies by strategically placing various plants, each with unique defensive or offensive capabilities, across a grid-like lawn. The primary resource, "sun," is collected to plant these defenses, with certain plants like Sunflowers generating additional sun to facilitate more extensive fortifications.

The game features an Adventure mode comprising five stages, each with ten levels, introducing new plant types and increasingly challenging zombie varieties as players progress. Notable zombie types include the Balloon Zombie, which floats above defenses but can be countered by specific plants, and the Dolphin Rider Zombie, which swiftly traverses water obstacles. The gameplay environment evolves from daytime to nighttime, affecting available plant types and introducing new challenges like fog-covered levels and rooftop terrains that require specialized plants.

Beyond Adventure mode, "Plants vs. Zombies" offers additional gameplay modes:

  • Mini-Games: Present unique challenges, often with altered rules or special conditions.

  • Puzzle Mode: Includes "Vasebreaker," where players break vases containing random plants or zombies, and "I, Zombie," allowing players to play from the zombies' perspective to overcome plant defenses.

  • Survival Mode: Tests players' endurance against continuous waves of zombies, requiring strategic planning and resource management.

The game's development was led by George Fan, who drew inspiration from earlier titles like "Insaniquarium" and tower defense mods from "Warcraft III." The design aimed to balance accessibility for casual gamers with depth to engage more experienced players. The art style, characterized by its humorous and cartoonish aesthetic, was crafted by Rich Werner, while the music, composed by Laura Shigihara, blends macabre and whimsical elements to complement the game's tone.

Upon release, "Plants vs. Zombies" received critical acclaim for its engaging gameplay, charming art style, and catchy soundtrack. It became PopCap's fastest-selling game at the time, surpassing previous hits like "Bejeweled" and "Peggle," and has since been considered one of the greatest video games of all time.
