Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency not controlled by any central authority, allowing for peer-to-peer transactions directly between users without the intervention of financial institutions. It was created by an unknown individual or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto, described in a whitepaper as a form of electronic cash that doesn't require a third party.

Key aspects of Bitcoin include:

  • Bitcoin addresses: Unique strings of letters and numbers used to receive Bitcoin; offer a level of anonymity if the owner's identity is hidden.
  • Predefined supply: There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins, ensuring scarcity.
  • Divisibility: Each bitcoin can be divided into 100 million smaller parts called satoshis, supporting transactions of any size.
  • Decentralization: No single entity can control or manipulate Bitcoin, making it resistant to corruption and censorship; no one can be banned from using the network.
  • Rapid Settlement: Transactions are confirmed roughly every ten minutes; settlement is faster than through traditional financial systems.
  • Immutability of transactions: Once a transaction is confirmed it cannot be reversed, offering security to recipients.

Bitcoin utilizes a chain of blocks to maintain a public ledger of all transactions, which is secure and nearly impossible to alter. Mining, the process of adding transactions to the time chain, ensures the integrity and chronological order of the ledger.
