Supergiant Games. (2017). Pyre [Video game]. Supergiant Games.
In the gameplay design of this high-fantasy game, players engage in an innovative combat system known as the "Rites," which is a blend of sports and strategy elements. The Rites serve as the game's central competitive activity and have been compared to a mix of Defense of the Ancients, Rocket League, and elements from Transistor, Supergiant's prior title.
Rites unfold on a field featuring two goal-like pyres at opposite ends. Each team consists of three exiles who compete to destroy the opposing team's pyre using a single glowing orb. This orb must be launched at the pyre to gradually deplete its health. The gameplay takes place from a top-down perspective, with players controlling one character at a time. They can pass the orb between their three exiles to maneuver strategically on the battlefield.
Characters in possession of the orb can be banished temporarily if they come into contact with an opponent’s aura, leading to a mix of offense and defense during play. Each character comes with unique skills such as dashes, long-range attacks, and special passive abilities that influence their playstyle. For instance, one character may be fast and agile but deal minimal damage to the pyre, while another might be slow but capable of inflicting significant damage.
The game's design provides a variety of characters, each with distinct attributes and abilities, allowing for diverse strategies and a deep level of tactical gameplay. This complexity is balanced by the simple objective of orb possession and pyre
