Final Fantasy VIII is a role-playing game (RPG) that revolves around the strategic use of a unique junction system, set in a richly crafted fantasy world represented through three core gameplay arenas: the world map, field map, and battle screen. In the game, players navigate the expansive world by various means like foot, vehicle, or airship. In the field map, characters are superimposed onto pre-rendered backgrounds of different environments.

Unlike its predecessors, Final Fantasy VIII abandons traditional weapon and armor systems in favor of the innovative Guardian Forces (GFs) system. Unique weapons tied to each character can be upgraded while Limit Breaks provide powerful attacks or supportive spells under specific conditions, like low health. Some Limit Breaks require precise input from the player to maximize effectiveness. The game also features a side activity in the form of the "Triple Triad" card game.

Experience points (EXP) and leveling work atypically, with a flat rate requirement of 1000 EXP per level, and enemy levels scaling with the player's team, creating dynamic encounters. Guardian Forces also learn abilities through Ability Points (AP). These abilities enhance characters or provide conveniences such as remote access to shops and different battle strategies. This system creates a sophisticated character customization setup, encouraging strategic management of characters and GFs to effectively navigate battles and the game world.
