Agile is a project management (What is Project Management) methodology (not a process). It was defined by a team of developers in the early 2000's at a conference with the goal of creating a better way to run digital studios. It's based on the idea that digital products require much more flexibility in the planning (Planning Projects) and executing (The Execution Phase) phases because there are so many more unknowns.
The most common process that uses these principles is Scrum (Scrum Process).
