Games for Learning vs. Designing Depth

One of the arguments I make (Games excel as teaching, not learning mediums) is that playing games, while better than most traditional non-engagement-style teaching methods, is still a dressed up form of solution based solving.

To truly understand the hairy problems in our world means you must have a fundamental understanding of deep systems (Gaia’s Garden) and how to design (and respect) the extreme levels of interconnectedness (All notes strengthen the value of your Zettelkasten) found in those complex adaptive systems (An Introduction to Complex Adaptive Systems).

So, even though playing a game isn't the ultimate in education tools, it's still an extremely valuable learning experience for the folks that design them. Because to design a complex system is to fully understand it.

Every interaction must be understood at its core. In fact, the iterative process of designing a complex system game follows the game loops (Game loops help players learn) learning model very closely.
