Parasites can only survive when attached to another productive organism. Parasites don't go and find nutrition on their own, they simply leech off the host, diverting the nutrition into their own system.
When the parasite dies off, it's defense mechanism is to send false signals to the host that it's better to not kill the parasite than to kill it. The parasite will release any of several kinds of toxins into the body of the host that cause horrible acute discomfort.
The negative symptoms created by neurotoxins, heavy metals, viruses, or similar agents is a much worse feeling than the slow chronic discomfort created by the perpetual leeching the parasite was doing earlier.
In the long-run though, a short but acute die off is preferable to a chronic leeching of resources. Even if it feels terrible in the immediate.
